Hygiene in Islam: Purity of Body and Spirit
· 8 min read
Cleanliness is "half of faith" in Islam. From ritual ablutions to daily personal hygiene, Islam integrates physical purity with spiritual purity.
Hygiene in Islam
Cleanliness as an Act of Faith
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Cleanliness is half of faith" (Muslim 223). Islam does not separate the spiritual from the physical; bodily purity is a condition for soul purity.
Wudu (Minor Ablution)
Performed before each prayer, washing: hands (3x), mouth (3x), nose (3x), face (3x), arms to elbows (3x), wiping head, ears, and feet to ankles (3x).
Ghusl (Full Bath)
Obligatory after marital relations, ejaculation, menstruation, and post-childbirth bleeding. Recommended on Fridays before congregational prayer and on Eid days.
Tayammum (Purification with Earth)
When water is unavailable or harmful, strike clean earth with palms and wipe face and hands.
Oral Hygiene
Siwak (tooth stick from Salvadora persica tree) is highly recommended. Today, toothbrush and toothpaste are acceptable alternatives.
Intimate Hygiene
Use left hand for intimate cleaning, wash with water, trim nails regularly, remove pubic and armpit hair at least every 40 days.
Clean Clothing
Prayer clothes must be clean. White clothing is recommended. The Prophet said: "Wear white, for it is the best of your garments" (Tirmidhi 994).
Environment and Community
Cleanliness extends to surroundings. The Prophet said: "Removing something harmful from the path is charity" (Bukhari 2989).
