The Importance of Neighbors in Islam

The Prophet (PBUH) emphasized neighbor's rights so much his Companions thought he would include them in inheritance. He said: "Jibril (Gabriel) recommended the neighbor so much that I thought he would make him an heir" (Bukhari 6015).

Neighbor Rights According to the Prophet

  1. Greet first
  2. Visit when sick
  3. Attend their funeral
  4. Congratulate in joy
  5. Console in sorrow
  6. Don't build higher than their house without permission
  7. Don't bother them with cooking smells without sharing
  8. Lend what they need
  9. Forgive their mistakes

Sharing Food

The Prophet said: "When you cook a stew, add more water and remember your neighbors" (Muslim 2625).

The Best Neighbor

"The best of companions before God is the best with his companion, and the best of neighbors before God is the best with his neighbor" (Tirmidhi 1944).

Non-Muslim Neighbors

Neighbor rights apply regardless of religion. The Prophet visited a sick Jewish neighbor who used to throw trash at him.

Do No Harm

One of Islam's maxims: "Do not cause harm nor return harm" (la darara wa la dirar).
