The Six Articles of Faith in Islam

· 8 min read

Belief in six fundamental principles defines a Muslim: God, angels, books, prophets, Day of Judgment, and divine decree. A detailed explanation of each.

The Six Articles of Faith

1. Belief in God (Tawhid)

Absolute monotheism is the core of Islam. God is one, unique, eternal. He has 99 names describing His attributes: the Merciful, the Compassionate, the Just, the Wise. Nothing is comparable to Him.

2. Belief in Angels

Beings of light created to worship God and execute His orders. Main angels: Jibril (Gabriel, brings revelation), Mikail (Michael, provider of sustenance), Israfil (will blow the Judgment trumpet). Each person has two angels recording their deeds (Kiraman Katibin).

3. Belief in Revealed Books

God sent books to different prophets: the Quran to Muhammad, the Torah (Tawrah) to Moses, the Gospel (Injil) to Jesus, the Psalms (Zabur) to David. The Quran is the final revelation, preserved without alteration.

4. Belief in Prophets

God sent prophets to every nation. 25 are mentioned in the Quran, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. All preached the same message: worship one God. Muhammad is the last prophet (seal of prophecy).

5. Belief in the Day of Judgment

All will be resurrected and judged according to their deeds. Believers enter Paradise (Jannah), unbelievers enter Hell (Jahannam). Only God knows when it will occur.

6. Belief in Divine Decree (Qadr)

Everything occurs by God's knowledge and will. This does not contradict human free will. God knows what we will choose, but we are responsible for our choices. The hadith of Jibril summarizes: "Believe in God, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree, its good and its bad" (Muslim 8).
