How to Prepare for Islamic Prayer (Salat)

· 10 min read

Preparation for prayer includes ritual purity, appropriate clothing, correct direction, and sincere intention. A practical step-by-step guide for salat.

How to Prepare for Islamic Prayer

1. Ritual Purity (Taharah)

Prayer without purity is invalid. Requires:

  • Wudu (minor ablution): after bathroom, sleep, bleeding, etc.
  • Ghusl (full bath): after marital relations, menstruation, etc.
  • Tayammum: purification with clean earth when no water is available

2. Appropriate Clothing

  • Men: must cover from navel to knees, preferably loose clothing
  • Women: must cover whole body except face and hands, non-transparent, non-tight

3. Clean Place

Prayer can be performed in any clean place. A prayer rug is not obligatory but helps ensure cleanliness.

4. Direction (Qibla)

All Muslims pray toward the Kaaba in Mecca. Can be determined by compass, sun position, or local mosques.

5. Intention (Niyyah)

Made in the heart, not spoken aloud.

6. Correct Time

Each prayer has its time window: Fajr (dawn to sunrise), Dhuhr (noon to shadow doubling), Asr (until sunset), Maghrib (sunset to nightfall), Isha (nightfall to dawn).

Basic Prayer Steps

  1. Standing, say "Allahu Akbar" raising hands
  2. Recite Al-Fatihah + another surah
  3. Bow (ruku')
  4. Straighten up
  5. Prostrate (sujud) twice
  6. Stand for next rak'ah
  7. At end, sit and recite Tashahhud and Salawat
  8. Greet right and left: "Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah"
