Origins of Islam: From Revelation to Community of Believers
· 10 min read
Islam was born in the 7th century in the Arabian peninsula with the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. In just 23 years, it transformed a tribal society into a community of believers unified by monotheism.
Origins of Islam
Pre-Islamic Context (Jahiliyyah)
Before Islam, the Arabian peninsula lived in "Jahiliyyah" (age of ignorance). Society was tribal, polytheistic (360 idols in the Kaaba), with constant warfare, female infanticide, and drunkenness. Only some Jewish and Christian communities maintained monotheism.
The First Revelation
In 610 CE, the angel Gabriel appeared to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the cave of Hira, Mount Nur, near Mecca, with the command: "Read (Iqra)! In the name of your Lord who created" (Quran 96:1). This marked the beginning of revelation that would last 23 years.
Mecca: 13 Years of Preaching
For 13 years, Muhammad preached secretly then publicly in Mecca. The message was simple: "There is no god but God." The first believers were his wife Khadija, his cousin Ali, and his friend Abu Bakr. Persecution by the Quraysh was intense: economic boycott, torture of believing slaves, and death threats.
The Hijrah (622 CE)
Facing growing persecution, the Prophet emigrated to Medina (Yathrib) in 622 CE. This event (Hijrah) marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Medina, Muhammad established the first Islamic state, uniting emigrants (muhajirun) and helpers (ansar) in a community (ummah) based on faith.
Medina: 10 Years of Building
In Medina, Islam consolidated as religion, state, and society. The five daily prayers, Ramadan fasting, zakat, and family and penal laws were established. The Prophet led defensive battles (Badr, Uhud, the Trench) and expanded Islam's influence across Arabia.
Conquest of Mecca (630 CE)
In 630 CE, the Prophet entered Mecca peacefully, destroyed the idols in the Kaaba, and declared a general amnesty. Almost all of Arabia embraced Islam in the following two years.
The Legacy
When the Prophet died in 632 CE, he had transformed Arabia. The Quran's message and his example (sunnah) would continue expanding across three continents, giving rise to one of history's greatest civilizations.
