Raising Children in Islam: Education and Values
· 8 min read
Islam offers a complete guide for raising children, from birth to adulthood. Quranic teaching, discipline with love, and character formation.
Raising Children in Islam
The Newborn
Traditional practices include: adhan in the right ear, tahnik (soft date on the palate), aqiqah (animal sacrifice on 7th day), choosing a beautiful name, and shaving the head with charity equivalent to the hair's weight in silver.
Early Education
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Every child is born in fitrah (pure natural disposition), and his parents make him Jewish, Christian, or Magian" (Bukhari 1358). At 7 years, start teaching prayer; by 10, gently encourage it.
Discipline
Islam emphasizes discipline with love and moderation. The Prophet never hit a child or servant. Correction should be gradual: verbal warning, bed separation, and only in extreme cases a light tap that causes no pain (controversial among modern scholars).
Character Education
Core values: sincerity, honesty, respect for parents, generosity, responsibility, humility.
Play and Affection
The Prophet played with children, carried them on his back, kissed and hugged them. He said to a Bedouin: "What can I do if God has removed mercy from your heart?" (Bukhari 5997).
The Parents' Example
The most powerful educational tool is example. Children learn more from what they see than what they are told.
