· 10 min read
The Five Pillars are the foundational framework of Islamic life: declaration of faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage. Learn about each in detail.
The Five Pillars of Islam
1. Shahada — Testimony of Faith
"I bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God." This simple declaration, said with conviction, makes a person Muslim. It is the gateway to Islam.
2. Salat — Prayer
Five daily prayers at specific times: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (noon), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), Isha (night). Prayer can be performed individually or in congregation (preferably in the mosque). Includes standing, bowing, prostration, and sitting.
3. Zakat — Obligatory Charity
2.5% of annual savings (above a minimum called nisab) is given to the needy. It purifies wealth and establishes social justice.
4. Sawm — Ramadan Fasting
Abstinence from food, drink, and marital relations from dawn to sunset during Ramadan. Develops self-discipline, empathy for the hungry, and God-consciousness.
5. Hajj — Pilgrimage to Mecca
Obligatory once in life for those with physical and financial ability. Performed in Dhul-Hijjah. Includes circumambulation of the Kaaba, running between Safa and Marwa, standing at Arafah, and stoning the pillars.
