Sukkot: The festival of tabernacles
· 5 min read
Sukkot celebrates the divine protection during the 40 years in the desert. For seven days, Jews live in booths (sukkah), take the four species, and rejoice.
Sukkot
The sukkah
A temporary booth with a roof of branches (sechach), where one eats and (if possible) sleeps for seven days. The sukkah symbolizes life's fragility and trust in God.
The four species
Lulav (palm), Etrog (citron), Hadass (myrtle), and Aravah (willow). They are shaken together during Hallel.
Joy
Sukkot is "the time of our joy" (zeman simchateinu). It includes Simchat Torah (joy of the Torah) and Hoshana Rabbah.
Reading: Talmud Bavli Sukkah. Shulchan Aruch OC 625-669.
