· 6 min read

Discover the meaning of Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power that is better than a thousand months. Learn about Surah Al-Qadr (97:1-5), the signs of this blessed night, recommended practices such as i'tikaf and prayer, and the powerful du'a that Aisha learned from the Prophet Muhammad.

What is Laylat al-Qadr?

Laylat al-Qadr (ليلة القدر), known as the Night of Power or the Night of Destiny, is the holiest night of the Islamic calendar. It is the night when the Quran was first revealed from the heavenly tablet to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the angel Gabriel.

"Indeed, We sent it [the Quran] down during the Night of Power. And what will make you know what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit [the angel Gabriel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn." (Quran 97:1-5)

A thousand months equals approximately 83 years and 4 months. A single night of sincere worship surpasses an entire lifetime of worship without it. It is an unparalleled opportunity for spiritual transformation.

Surah Al-Qadr: The Revelation

The Quran dedicates an entire chapter to this night. Surah 97 (Al-Qadr) consists of 5 verses describing:

  1. The descent of the Quran — "Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Power."
  2. The magnificence of the night — "And what will make you know what the Night of Power is?"
  3. Its incomparable value — "The Night of Power is better than a thousand months."
  4. Angelic activity — "The angels and the Spirit descend therein."
  5. Divine peace — "Peace it is until the emergence of dawn."

The word "Al-Qadr" means power, honor, dignity, and also destiny or decree. On this night, Allah decrees the affairs of the coming year: provision, life, death, and other destinies.

Signs of Laylat al-Qadr

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) mentioned several signs that help identify the night:

  • Gentle sunrise: The sun rises without strong rays, resembling a full moon.
  • Tranquility: The night is serene, neither cold nor hot, with a palpable peace.
  • Clear sky: The sky is clear and stars shine brightly.
  • Gentle breeze: No strong winds or storms.

"The morning after Laylat al-Qadr, the sun rises without rays, like a full moon." (Muslim)

It is important to remember these are signs, not conditions. Their absence does not mean it was not Laylat al-Qadr.

When Does It Occur?

Laylat al-Qadr falls within the last ten nights of Ramadan, specifically on the odd nights: 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th.

The Prophet said: "Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." (Bukhari)

Traditionally, the 27th night is considered the most likely, but scholars emphasize it should be sought on all odd nights. The divine wisdom in concealing the exact date is so that believers intensify their worship throughout the last ten days.

1. I''tikaf (Spiritual Retreat)

I''tikaf is the practice of staying in the mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan, devoting oneself exclusively to worship. The Prophet used to practice i''tikaf every year, and in the year of his death he did so for twenty days (Bukhari).

2. Night Prayer (Qiyam al-Layl / Tahajjud)

Voluntary prayer during the night is the best way to make the most of Laylat al-Qadr. The Prophet said: "Whoever stands in prayer during Laylat al-Qadr with faith and hope of reward will have his past sins forgiven." (Bukhari and Muslim)

3. The Du''a Aisha Asked For

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet: "O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say?" He replied:

"Say: Allahumma innaka ''afuwwun tuhibbu al-''afwa fa''fu ''anni — O Allah, You are Forgiving, You love forgiveness, so forgive me." (Tirmidhi, Ahmad, Ibn Majah)

This beautiful and simple supplication can be repeated throughout the night.

4. Recitation of the Quran

Read and meditate on the Quran, especially Surah Al-Qadr and chapters related to forgiveness and mercy.

5. Sadaqah (Charity)

Charity given on this night is immensely rewarded. Even a small gesture of generosity can equate to months or years of continuous charity.

Why Is It Better Than a Thousand Months?

Imam Al-Qurtubi explained that "a thousand months" represents an extensive period of continuous worship. Laylat al-Qadr surpasses that period because:

  1. The revelation of the Quran occurred on this night, bringing eternal guidance.
  2. The angels descend with blessings and mercy.
  3. It is a night of peace until dawn, free from evil.
  4. Annual decrees are established with divine wisdom.
  5. Forgiveness is abundant for those who sincerely seize it.

Signs of Acceptance

Although we cannot be certain whether our worship was accepted, some people report internal changes after experiencing Laylat al-Qadr:

  • A renewed desire to do good.
  • An inner peace that lasts beyond Ramadan.
  • Greater ease in avoiding sins.
  • A deep sense of Allah's presence.

Conclusion

Laylat al-Qadr is the most precious gift of Ramadan. It is a unique opportunity to reset the soul, seek divine forgiveness, and accumulate rewards that surpass an entire lifetime of worship. May Allah grant us to reach it and accept our supplications.

"Peace it is until the emergence of dawn." (Quran 97:5) — may that peace fill our hearts, now and always.
